Knee Joint effusion problem is also called ‘water on the knee’ in colloquial language. It takes place when there is an excess amount of fluid accumulation in the knee area. A proper understanding about the condition helps an individual to take effective precautionary measures.

The problem of joint effusion in knees is usually confused with ‘joint fusion’. However, the problem of ‘fluid on the knee’ differs from joint fusion wherein the latter one is referred as ‘arthrodesis’. Joint effusion in knees is a condition wherein accumulation of fluid in the knee joint area leads to many complications. A person suffering from conditions like arthritis is likely to suffer from this. Moreover, injury caused to ligaments or to the meniscus also leads to collection of fluid in the knee joint.

Many times, the accumulated fluid is synovial in nature which means that it comes straight from the knee joint. But in some cases, it gets released from somewhere else. Symptoms of Joint effusion in knees include swelling and severe pain in the knee region . Puffiness of knee bones can lead to the condition wherein one knee may appear larger in size than the other. Besides this, a person suffering from the problem cannot walk properly, feels discomfort, faces difficulties in activities like bending and cannot straighten the knees easily.
